Welp. I am returning to this website after several months of forgetting about it. Obviously my plan on documenting every step on the development process was not followed through. That said, the game has been completed and submitted to Steam so that's cool! I suppose I'll be posting a link to that when the time comes in a bit here. May come back to this and post further documentation but I'll leave it at this for now and hope that I better update on future projects lol
I need to write the final quest for one of our characters. His name is Pat and he's this high strung businessman who died in a car crash. Unfortunately I am not entirely sure yet what is keeping him on Earth and so I can't write a quest in which that is resolved. In the meantime, I've been working on encounters with "one-off" ghosts the player can stumble upon while exploring the cemetery. These will ideally help fill out the world a lot more than just having the 4 core ghosts. The encounters aren't necessarily about helping that ghost move on, it's just a small interaction or mini-quest. For example I have a Ring inspired ghost encounter named "Well Ghost". She climbs out of a well that has appeared in the cemetery, and, speaking entirely in Japanese, hands you a VHS copy of her favorite movie. If the player returns to the well in 7 days, she thanks them for returning the tape and gives them a reward - a sopping wet CRT TV.
Just some screenshots of what the game is looking like so far. Each of the ghosts will have their own portraits when speaking with them, reacting to the dialogue. Also shown here is the main game with some work in progress post-processing effects!
To post about what has recently been going on, the team met twice this weekend. Once to discuss our priorities over the coming weeks of the project as we work on putting things together, and once to have a team dinner at a Korean hot pot! (I had never been to one before and it took me a second to understand how it worked but I got it eventually. Neither here nor there though). The team meeting was incredibly productive and we got a lot sorted that I had previously been worried about; we are looking pretty good for the rest of development as long as everyone pulls their weight!
This game has had a long long road of changes and ideation. September through December was focused on creating the prototype and the alpha. We are now officially feature locked and are focused on putting everything together!
While we are technically feature complete, we have undergone extensive amount of reworks as we try to achieve the best possible version of this game. Which means as a writer on the team, I am still working on completing the main quests for the main cast of ghosts as well as writing the miscellaneous encounters the player will find throughout the game!
Its been fun outlining and writing the quests for each character that player will interact with. Each one will cap off in a final quest that helps the ghost move on to the afterlife, with the ending being their ultimate departure from the cemetery.
My Little Cemetery has been in development since about September of last year, however this website was only started a couple weeks ago so that's why there's not much here. I will be of course writing about the development process and where we go from here!
